Introduction on the security cylinder (what is a security cylinder)

In Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, Euro profile cylinders are mainly used for recessed locks and round tail cylinders for surface-mounted locks.

The Europrofile cylinder essentially consists of a body, core (2x), carrier, fittings, permutation pins and springs.

Cylinders are produced according to European standard EN1303 and DIN 18252.

Dimensions of standard double security cylinder :

A standard cylinder has a dimension of 60mm

L=60mm,

B=30mm and

C=30mm.

Starting from this basic size, extensions are possible per 5mm per side.

Cylinder with hazard function

This means that a key can be inserted on both sides at the same time and still open the lock. Quite unnecessary interventions happen annually by locksmiths to open a door where there is a key on the inside of the cylinder and where the resident needed medical attention and the family could not get in with a spare key. Thus, a lot of time is lost in cases of medical urgency.

Knob cylinder

There is a rotary knob on the inside of the door so that the lock can be closed and opened very easily from the inside, ideal for panic situations. It also prevents a key from being inserted into the cylinder from the inside. In practice, it appears that doors are locked much more often when a rotary knob is provided, which of course clearly increases security.

Half cylinder

If the door should only be able to be opened from one side, then one can install a half cylinder. This is frequently used as an additional burglar-resistant feature on back doors, fire escape doors on back sides of industrial buildings, ... etc. These are then executed "blind" on the aggression side, without access with a key.

Important note :

A security cylinder primarily protects against unauthorized copying of a key. Security cylinders, on average, are also more robustly constructed against breaking, but installing solid security hardware is a necessity, even with the best and most promising security cylinders.

This physical protection protects the cylinder from breaking off, a commonly used burglary technique that has been dubbed the "Bulgarian method." Breaking off a cylinder that protrudes more than 2mm, without a security rosette or security hardware is child's play using pliers, a hammer or specially constructed tools and is done fairly silently.
